The initials LVN stand for Licensed Vocational Nurse. If you have chosen to be an LVN you will need to be trained by a certified school. To begin the college training you need to become an LVN you will first have to have your high school diploma or the equivalent. After accomplishing this, you will need to search for a school in your area that offers the classes you need to become an LVN. Most will be one year long courses. You will be required to work in a hospital or nursing home setting as part of your training.
The classes you will be given are somewhat the same as the classes an LPN has to take. You will study the basics of patient care, along with learning to take vital signs, height, weight and how to do charting correctly. You will also study and learn about the laws that a nurse is expected to abide by, such as confidentiality laws pertaining to the patients privacy. You will learn to do medical charting and insurance forms, along with a brief course in office management.
You will be taught the basics of anatomy, physiology and biology. Many who attend LVN classes have to take refresher courses in math. You will be trained to gather and chart patient information, prepare and give injections, collect Lab samples, supervise nursing assistants, and assist patients in their personal care. You will be taught to notice the signs of illnesses in patients, how to communicate in the best possible way with the patients, and how to communicate with the patients family members. You will learn how to deal with patients who have conditions like dementia. If you find that you have a specific interest in a certain disease or condition, you may be able to work in that particular part or wing of the hospital or nursing home while in school.
When you enter LVN classes you will also learn how to work closely with doctors and your supervisors, who are usually registered nurses. It is a good idea to make sure the college you choose will give you plenty of hands-on training. A good LVN class work but also work that has you deal directly with the patients personal care. This type of training will help you find better employment.
It is also a good idea to find a school that offers LVN classes with the lowest price possible. All school financial advisors will be able to tell you if you are eligible for grants or student loans. Check your school to see if they have a job placement assistance program. Many LVN's find employment at the place they do their clinical studies, and are hired as soon as, or even before they have passed the final exam.
After graduating from your LVN classes you will be required to take a test in the state in which you reside or plan to work in. Each state is different and varies in what type of training you will need before they allow you to take the state test.
